The Story Behind the Sacred Leaf

How a grandmother's garden and a ancient Vedic plant ignited a movement to preserve sacred traditions through handcrafted jewellery.

1

The Garden of Beginnings

Our founder, Priya Devi, grew up in a village outside Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, where her grandmother maintained a sprawling garden filled with medicinal and sacred plants. Among them stood a cluster of Mimosa Pudica — the "touch-me-not" plant, known in Tamil as "Thotta Chinungi" and in Hindi as "Lajwanti."

As a child, Priya was mesmerised by how the leaves would fold inward when touched, as if bowing in reverence. Her grandmother would say: "This plant knows the power of stillness. It protects itself through sensitivity — just as a devoted heart protects itself through prayer."

🌿 Mimosa Pudica has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. Ancient texts describe it as a plant that embodies divine feminine energy, protection, and spiritual sensitivity.

A Discovery in Varanasi

Years later, during a pilgrimage to Varanasi, Priya encountered an elderly craftsman near the ghats who was preserving sacred plants inside copper lockets using a technique passed down through seven generations of his family. The process — combining resin, botanical essences, and metalwork — was on the verge of being lost forever.

Priya spent three months learning from him, absorbing not just the technique but the philosophy: that sacred objects must be made with a still mind, pure intention, and deep reverence. Every step — from harvesting the plant at dawn to sealing the final locket — carries a prayer.

"He told me: 'A locket made with prayer is not jewellery — it is a companion for the soul.' That sentence changed my life."
— Priya Devi, Founder

Dream Magnet Is Born

In 2018, Priya established Dream Magnet in a small workshop in Chennai, working with two local artisans. The first batch of 50 Lajwanti lockets sold out within a week through word of mouth alone. Customers reported feeling calmer, more protected, and deeply connected to their spiritual practice while wearing them.

Today, Dream Magnet employs 18 artisans, all trained in the traditional preservation and metalworking techniques. Each product is still made by hand, one at a time, with the same reverence with which the very first locket was crafted.
